Saturday 27th May - Our hosts bid us a pleasant farewell and we head off in the pouring rain for our overnight stop in Metz. Sunday 28th May - After breakfast we head off across France, stopping for Lunch in Epernay, then head for home through the vineyards passing close to a place with the name Dormans !. ]]> Fri May 26 2006 Kitzbuhel Horn Alpine Walk and the Thurn Pass http://austrianswiss.fotopic.net/c1000128.html Thursday 25th May - We headed off the short distance to Zitzbuhel via St Johann in Tirol. At Kitzbuhel we boarded the Kitzbuhler Hornbahn 1, cable car for the ride to Pletzeralm (1270m) the middle station where we changed to the Kitzbuheler Hornbahn 3, Aerial Tram to the Horn Summit (1996m) or (2000m) at the top of the TV tower. Then we were taken by our excellent guides, Astrid and Roger for a walk with magnificent views in all directions which took us through the Alpine Flower garden and gradually down to the Alpenhaus for our Brettljause Lunch of Cheese and and smoked meats. We then went down on the Kitzbuheler Hornbahn 2 to the middle station, changing to the Hornbahn 1 for the final descent. Later we went on a scenic tour over the Pass Thurn back to Fieberbrunn. A very pleasant town with many fine restaurants and small shops, but the rain did not spoil the visit too much. We then headed off to Salzburg for a guided walk of the City followed by some free time to explore the streets. Later we had Dinner in St. Peters Monastery which was accompanied by some wonderful Mozart music. We had a special stop at Leogang station to allow photos to be taken of the train. We then travelled the short distance and crossed the River Inn and drove into Rattenberg, the smallest town in Austria, with quaint streets and many small shops which specialise in Glass souvenirs. Achenseebahn runs during the summer months only and the three original Rack and Adhesion 0-4-0T locomotives that were built in 1899 are still operating today. All three locomotives can be seen in service in my photographs which were taken on Wednesday 6th August 2003. Tuesday 5 August 2003: The 7 km. Locomotive No. 2 'Jenbach' shunts into the platfrom at Jenbach to form a train up the mountain. Locomotive No. 1 'Eben am Achensee' waits patiently to depart on the 10.15 to Achensee Seespitz, this is the train we travelled on. Locomotive No. 3 'Achenkirch' waits at Achensee Seespitz before heading back down the mountain to Jenbach. A train leaves Seespitz bound for Jenbach.

There is a regular hourly service using 3 coach Diesel units and Three Steam hauled Trains each way during the summer months and the Easter and Christmas holidays. My photographs show a selection of what we saw during the three days when we stayed at the Hotel Neue Post in Zell-am-Ziller in August 2003.
